Planning assumptions · 5

  • This calculator models one wall elevation at a time. Estimate each side of the building separately and combine the lists before ordering.
  • Opening deductions use simple rectangular door and window areas and do not add back starter, head flashing, casing, channel, or trim packages around each opening.
  • Cladding unit counts use nominal manufacturer coverage baselines; exposure, reveal, lap, stagger, break pattern, and damage replacement can change the real field takeoff.
  • House wrap and corner trim are directional planning allowances only. This calculator does not size flashing tape, sill pans, rainscreen spacers, fastener schedules, or code-required water-management detailing.
  • The BOM rounds packaged materials to whole purchase units such as gallons, bags, boxes, buckets, rolls, cartons, tubes, jars, bundles, or kits, so bought quantity can exceed the exact theoretical coverage shown by the area metrics.

Common siding terms used in this estimate

Quick reference only. Manufacturer instructions and local code review still control installation details.

  • Square: The siding industry area unit: 1 square = 100 sq ft of wall coverage. Vinyl cartons in this calculator cover about 2 squares each.
  • Starter strip: The level strip fastened at the bottom of the wall that locks or supports the first course of siding.
  • J-channel: The J-shaped vinyl trim that receives siding ends around windows, doors, and other openings on vinyl installs. Wood and fiber-cement systems use casing and flashing instead.
  • House wrap: The water-resistive barrier layer between sheathing and siding that sheds water while letting the wall dry.
  • Gable rise: The extra triangular wall height above the main rectangular wall on a gable-end elevation, measured from the top of the wall to the roof peak.
  • Outside corner: A corner where two exterior walls meet pointing away from the house; each one gets a corner post or corner boards.
