Planning rules & code notes U.S. planning assumptions, pricing coverage, and permit-sensitive notes for this calculator.
  • This calculator uses common IRC-style residential assumptions for spacing, waste, and coverage. Confirm site conditions, spans, and local code before ordering.
  • Regional pricing currently covers selected states. If your saved state falls outside coverage, the calculator keeps it visible and falls back to calculator default pricing instead of silently switching regions.

Planning assumptions

Material quantities and planning BOM for Shed Material Calculator based on selected inputs.

Planning assumptions · 8

  • Estimator scope is limited to rectangular single-room sheds with a gable roof rather than permit-ready engineering, truss design, or loft framing.
  • Wall stud spacing is modeled at 16 in o.c., while roof rafters use a conservative fixed spacing based on the resolved roof framing package.
  • Door and window headers are modeled as double 2x6 members with an assumed spacer layer that is not itemized as a separate specialty panel SKU.
  • T1-11 and LP SmartSide panel paths are treated as structural siding in this calculator, so separate wall sheathing and housewrap are not added on those paths.
  • Skid-floor paths assume graded bearing or site-prepped support points, but gravel pad excavation, geotextile, and compacted aggregate are not itemized in this shed calculator.
  • Property setback rules and HOA covenants vary by jurisdiction and may restrict shed size, placement, or exterior finish. Confirm local requirements before building.
  • Asphalt shingle roofing automatically includes underlayment and drip edge, but final ventilation, flashing, and local code details still require field review.
  • Uplift connectors such as hurricane ties or hold-downs are not itemized unless you turn on the planning allowance, so local wind exposure and anchorage review still belong to field and permit review.

Shed Foundation and Floor Paths

This calculator models a simple rectangular shed either on a slab-on-grade path or on skids plus a framed wood floor. It does not replace engineered foundation design or itemize gravel-pad / geotextile site prep.

Path Main members Calculator rule Typical use
Skid floor 4x4 or 4x6 skids, pier blocks, 2x4 or 2x6 joists, 23/32 subfloor About one skid runner every 4 ft of shed width. Floor framing under 18 in of exposed-soil clearance is upgraded to PT in this calculator. Common movable / backyard utility sheds.
Slab-on-grade Ready-mix concrete, PT sill plates, sill gasket, anchor bolts Wall bottom plates are modeled as PT members matching the resolved wall framing size on slab paths. Permanent slab sheds and site-built storage rooms.

This calculator follows conservative U.S. backyard-shed rules for skid floors, slab bottoms, wall framing, structural vs non-structural siding, and asphalt-shingle roofs. It is a planning BOM, not permit-ready engineering.
