Paver Pattern Waste Rules
Pattern choice now drives the default waste allowance. Custom waste remains available when field conditions are less typical.

Base and Bedding Layers
The calculator assumes dense-graded base gravel and keeps paver bedding sand at 1 in max using washed concrete sand, not stone dust or masonry sand.

Edging and Restraints
This calculator prices plastic and metal restraint systems. Concrete edge restraint remains a reference-note installation option, not a priced BOM path.

Joint Filler and Surface Protection
- Recommended joint fill: Polymeric sand remains the default paver-joint recommendation for residential patios.
- Chamfer rule: Keep the final sand level about 1/8 in below the bottom of the paver chamfer rather than overfilling the bevel.
- Compaction rule: Use a protective urethane paver pad under the plate compactor and only compact over completely dry pavers after sand placement.
- Sealer: Sealer is treated as an optional protection scope, not a mandatory baseline for every patio.
Concrete Slab Patio
A 4 in slab is still the default residential assumption, but this calculator now surfaces reinforcement, formwork, curing, and finish choices rather than hiding them in notes only.

Drainage and Layout Rules
- Drainage slope: Paver patios should slope about 3/16 in to 1/4 in per ft; concrete slab patios should slope about 1/8 in to 3/16 in per ft. Never plan a dead-flat patio surface.
- Layout modes: Use quick estimate when you only know area + perimeter. Use shape-aware mode when you can enter actual rectangle or L-shape dimensions.
- Base extension: For pavers, the compacted base extends by the larger of the entered base thickness or a size-based minimum per side.
- Excavation rule: Paver excavation assumes about 1/4 in of final settlement into the bedding layer and keeps the finished surface roughly flush with adjacent grade in this calculator.
- House clearance: Keep the finished patio below siding, stucco screeds, brick weeps, and similar moisture-sensitive transitions; a 2 in to 4 in clearance band is a common planning checkpoint.
- Utility locate: Call 811 before excavation. Even shallow patio digging can hit irrigation, telecom, low-voltage, or branch electrical runs.
- Regional coverage: Patio pricing and frost rules currently cover a limited list of states. Unsupported states fall back to calculator defaults with a warning.

All dimensions follow common U.S. nominal-versus-actual patio material conventions.
