Planning assumptions
4Planning assumptions · 4
- Wet and dry zones stay separate throughout the BOM. Direct shower / tub surround walls do not fall back to standard drywall in this calculator. Vanity backsplashes and toilet-side / plumbing-side walls stay on the dry-zone MR-drywall path unless they actually fall inside the direct tub / shower surround. This calculator does not auto-upgrade those walls to full shower-wall backer or membrane.
- Tile floor substrate is modeled as a directional path selection. It does not replace slab flattening, self-leveling, or full subfloor repair review. Uncoupling-membrane mode treats thinset as a double-application path: one bond coat under the membrane and one tile-setting coat above it.
- Dry-side doors and windows reduce the dry-zone board and paint path. The Shower-wall opening deduction separately reduces the direct wet-wall BOM; the preview reports the deduction but does not place the opening geometry.
- Toilet clearances in the preview are checked against the 21 in of front space residential code commonly asks for, not the 30 in that layout guides recommend for comfort. Clearing the check does not mean the room will feel roomy - compare your own layout against both.

6Bathroom layout needs review
-
Open decisions / checks
2- Dedicated plumbing-wall toilet layouts stay tight below 6 ft of room width, so confirm vanity-use aisle and toilet clearance before ordering.
- Preview fixtures - vanity, sink, toilet, tub / shower, glass, and trim - are schematic layout-only placeholders that follow the 3D view. They are not counted in the BOM and are not fixture procurement, plumbing trim, or local-code approval.
-
Estimate boundaries
4- Tub / existing receptor wet-area path: The BOM covers wall tile, backer, membrane, seam kit, and caulk only; tub, receptor, drain tie-in, manufacturer compatibility, and warranty path remain trade / manufacturer review.
- Rough plumbing, vent routing, exhaust ducting, and exterior wet-wall moisture control still need field-specific review.
- Existing condition risk: Unknown conditions stay a readiness gate until demo or inspection confirms walls, floor, and plumbing condition.
- Always confirm local code, fixture layout clearances, existing substrate condition, and manufacturer-specific waterproofing instructions before ordering.
Budget & installed scope
Read the materials subtotal beside quote-first allowances, installed-cost drivers, and the current scope/readiness selections.
- Materials subtotal: Bathroom shell and finish assemblies remain the materials-only BOM subtotal for shoppable rows.
- Quote-first allowance scope: No additional fixture, glass, vanity, lighting, trim, or finish hardware package is declared for the shoppable BOM.
- Installed-cost drivers: Layout changes, tub-to-shower conversions, walk-in shower glass, permit, labor, tax, delivery, contingency, and contractor overhead / profit remain installed-budget drivers.
- Like-for-like full bath refresh scope: fixture locations mostly stay in place; labor, permit / inspection review, overhead / profit, tax / delivery, and contingency stay outside the materials-only BOM.
- Current site readiness: Demo scope: Surface refresh / selective removal is the default review posture; demo and disposal remain quote-first outside the materials-only BOM. Existing-condition readiness: Unknown conditions remain open in Not included / Trade review.
- Current trade readiness: Plumbing scope: Like-for-like fixture locations are the default context, while rough-in condition still needs field review. Electrical / vent scope: Fan-only allowance on an existing route remains a material allowance, not approval of ducting, switching, or termination.
- Education only; not an installed quote, permit approval, code approval, legal advice, schedule commitment, or contractor estimate.
How pricing works
Where each price comes from, when it was checked, and what the formulas assume.
- Only the direct tub / shower surround stays on the wet-wall path. Vanity-back, toilet-side, and most room walls stay dry unless they fall inside that splash shell.

2026 U.S. Bathroom Remodel Planning Guide
Switch between tabs to compare nominal sizes, actual sizes, common uses, and planning rules for this project.
Wet vs. Dry Bathroom Areas
The main bathroom rule in this calculator is simple: only the direct tub / shower surround is treated as a dedicated waterproof wall assembly by default. Vanity backsplashes and toilet-side partitions stay on the dry-side path unless they actually fall inside that direct splash shell.
| Zone | Typical finish | Allowed board path | Planning rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shower / tub surround | Wall tile | Cement board, fiber-cement backer, or foam backer board | Direct shower walls stay on a dedicated waterproof path in this calculator: membrane over cementitious board or seam-treatment kits for integrated foam systems. |
| Bathroom dry walls | Painted wall finish | Mold-resistant drywall | Dry-side walls remain separate from direct shower-wall backer. |
| Vanity backsplash wall | Painted wall or local backsplash tile | Mold-resistant drywall | A sink backsplash does not automatically turn the full wall into a shower-wall backer / membrane assembly in this calculator. |
| Toilet / plumbing-side wall | Painted wall finish | Mold-resistant drywall | Plumbing-wall depth and toilet location do not by themselves convert that wall to a shower-wall assembly. |
| Bathroom ceiling | Bathroom-rated paint | Mold-resistant drywall | Modeled only when the ceiling toggle stays on. |
Shower-Wall Backer Board Choices
All three backer paths below are valid shower-wall planning paths, and this calculator now separates membrane-over-board systems from foam seam / transition kits. Field verification is still required.
| Board path | Typical size | Common use | Planning note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cement board | 1/2 in, 3 ft x 5 ft | Mainstream shower and tub surround backer | Heavy and durable; still needs waterproofing over or behind the board per system design. |
| Fiber-cement backer | 1/2 in, 3 ft x 5 ft | Lighter cement-based backer path | Used the same way as shower-wall backer rather than painted drywall. |
| Foam backer board | 1/2 in, 3 ft x 5 ft | Lightweight panelized shower systems | Foam-board seams still need compatible seam and waterproof treatment. |
Floor Tile Substrate Boundaries
This calculator keeps floor underlayment explicit because tile-over-slab, uncoupling membrane, and floor cement board are not interchangeable planning paths.
| Path | Typical layers | Use case | Planning note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Existing slab | Prepared slab + thinset + tile | Flat slab or slab-like base already ready for tile | Assumes substrate prep exists outside this BOM. |
| Uncoupling membrane | Prepared floor + thinset + membrane + thinset + tile | Common wood-floor or crack-isolation upgrade path | Thinset is modeled as a double application path. |
| Floor cement board | Subfloor + thinset + board + thinset + tile | Traditional tile-underlayment path over wood framing | Floor cement board is modeled separately from shower-wall backer even though both are cementitious panels. |
Plumbing Wall Framing Rules
A bathroom toilet wall with a 3 in drain path is one of the clearest places where a calculator should favor a conservative 2x6 wall rather than silently keeping a 2x4 selection.
| Wall type | Nominal size | Actual size | Common use | Planning rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard partition | 2x4 | 1.5 in x 3.5 in | General non-plumbing bathroom partitions | Acceptable for dry partitions and simple dividers. |
| Toilet / plumbing wall | 2x6 | 1.5 in x 5.5 in | Conservative wall path where toilet waste and vent routing need more cavity depth | This calculator upgrades a toilet plumbing wall to 2x6 if you request 2x4. |
Bathroom Clearance Checks
- Toilet side clearance: A common IRC planning baseline is about 15 in minimum from toilet centerline to each side obstruction.
- Toilet front clearance: A common planning baseline is about 21 in minimum clear space in front of the toilet.
- Shower minimum: A simple planning floor for shower size is 30 in x 30 in clear.
- Calculator stance: This page does not claim full code layout review, but it does flag obviously tight room dimensions.
Ventilation and Exterior Shower-Wall Notes
- Exhaust fan allowance: The BOM models a bathroom exhaust-fan allowance only, not full duct, roof cap, switch, or branch-circuit routing.
- Exterior shower walls: Exterior shower walls deserve extra review for insulation, drying path, and waterproof-layer sequencing.
- Moisture sandwich warning: Do not read this calculator as approval for trapping moisture between an exterior vapor retarder and an interior waterproof assembly.
This calculator keeps wet and dry bathroom assemblies separate, makes floor substrate and plumbing-wall choices explicit, and exposes ventilation and exterior wet-wall assumptions instead of burying them in generic finish coverage.
